New to Sewing Tutorials: Getting to know your sewing machine and having a go!

How to get sewing on that brand new machine sitting in its box!

This video is aimed at the person who is so new to sewing that simply taking the new sewing machine out of the box and getting started is rather terrifiying!  I understand your fear and you are not alone;  I have so many students who feel exactly the same, so my New to Sewing Tutorials are aimed at taking the fear out of the initial setting up of your machine and starting to have a go.

I will be adding other videos on various aspects of Beginners Sewing but the first step is to take the machine out of the box and put the cable into the side of it and plug it in.  Also plug in the cable for the foot pedal too.  The cable will be curled up inside the box somewhere and the foot pedal too, so be brave and unwind them.  Then plug them into your machine in the socket on the right-hand side.  When you switch the machine on (small button near socket on side of machine) the light will come on and it will make a 'waking up' sort of mechanical noise.

Next, have a look through the Instruction Manual for your machine;  these are VERY WELL written and explain all aspects of the machine and include diagrams too.  Trust that this manual will help you A LOT.

You will now need to thread your machine.  Take a look at your manual and also have a look at my How to thread a machine video in the Hints & Tips.  The video shows you how to thread the machines which I use but these are very similar to most machines - check your instruction manual so you get yours right as this part is important. There will be lots of diagrams in your manual to help you too.

There are two parts to the threading: threading the top thread to then go through the needle, and filling the bobbin so you can bring that thread up from below the needle so the machine can work its magic to combine these two threads to make a line of sewing.  Trust the process.. follow the video or instruction manual; it's not that complicated so just have a go!

Now you are ready to have a go with your new machine, but what are all the numbers and stitches, I hear you ask!  Fear not, take a look at the New to Sewing Tutorial:  Getting familiar with your machine and having a go.   Once you have watched the video and practised a bit, you will be ready to start your first project!

Take a look at the other New to Sewing Tutorials in the Hints & Tips section as these are all free guides to help you understand and learn the very early stages of sewing on a machine.

Just make a start; once you start you will wonder why you were so hesitant!  There is so much fun and creativity to be had in sewing so let's get your journey started.
