New to Sewing Tutorial: How to thread a sewing machine

November 6, 2025

Watch the video here which shows you how to thread the Janome DC230.

The following video shows you how to thread this sewing machine which is a modern digital machine that I use in my sewing classes.  The way you thread any machine is pretty similar but check in your instruction manual before you have a go.  If you don't have an instruction manual you can find most instructions online these days so all you need to do is type in the name and number of your machine and chances are the manual will come up

Threading your machine can seem like a real block to getting started on your sewing journey... if only someone could sit with you and show you exactly what to do?  Hopefully the video here will do just that - give you the confidence to have a go at threading your machine.  Set aside some time to thread it, but I suggest the time set aside is only for threading.  Once it's threaded you can follow the next New to Sewing Tutorial which is all about Getting to Know your Machine and Having a Go!

When I am teaching students and something 'goes wrong' with the machine and the line of sewing is just not as it should be, 9.5 times out of 10 the reason is human error when threading the machine (0.5 times it is the fabric needing a bit of help to go through the machine).  The threading issue is easily corrected by pulling the thread out completely (main thread on top and bobbin on the bottom) and following the instructions to the letter a second time.  Even a tiny 'click' when the bobbin thread is loaded is really important so just try to follow all the stages meticulously!

Best of luck!
