Level required: Recent experience of sewing (including dressmaking) so that you are confident at using a sewing machine to make basic projects. OR completion of Beginners 8 week Course at The Hemming Bird.

Dates and times for 2026:
Either Tuesday Eves, 18.00 - 20.30. Starting on Tues 20 Jan for 8 weeks.
OR Wednesday mornings, 10.00 - 12.30. Starting on Wed 14 Jan for 8 weeks.

This Improvers Course aims to build your confidence in using your machine and work on more advanced projects. We will also make some pyjama bottoms so you can have a go at making your own clothes using a commercial paper pattern.
So far, if you have completed the Beginners Course, you will have learnt to use various feet for various stitches and built confidence in sewing straight, turning corners, manipulating fabric AND measuring and cutting fabric accurately for your projects.
In this course we will cover:
Pyjama bottoms with elasticated waist
Piped box cushion with Hidden Zip fastening
Two or three other projects chosen from various including:
Waterproof lined washbag with PVC bottom and ribbon trim
Throw It All In Bag with lining, interlining and internal pockets
Mitred corners
Inserting a concealed zip (different to a hidden zip.
Repeat make of piped cushion with hidden zip for extra practice of piping etc
Repeat make of envelope cushion for extra practice - include a contrast strip across the top edge
